The Punjab Wildlife Department has officially begun registering parrots across the province. Officials confirmed that the deadline for registration has been fixed for December 5, urging bird owners to complete the process before time runs out.
According to the department, keeping unregistered parrots after the deadline will result in legal action. The registration fee has been set at Rs 1,000 per parrot. Authorities said the measure aims to regulate pet bird ownership and ensure that protected species are properly monitored.
The mandatory registration covers Alexandrine parrots, rose-ringed parrots, grey-headed parrots, and blossom-headed parrots. These species are among the most commonly kept birds in Punjab but are also frequently targeted in illegal wildlife trade.
Officials explained that the registration process can be completed easily through the Wildlife Department’s official website or via the Punjab Wildlife mobile app. Citizens can enter their details, upload bird information, and make the payment online. The department hopes this digital process will make registration quick and transparent.
Wildlife experts say the move will help authorities monitor domestic parrot populations and reduce illegal trade. Many of these birds are captured from the wild, leading to habitat loss and population decline. Legal registration will create a clear record of ownership and discourage the unlawful sale of parrots in local markets.
