Pakistan Airports to Go Fully Cashless Under Digital Transformation Drive

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced a major step toward modernization, confirming that all airports across the country will soon become completely cashless. This move marks a new phase in Pakistan’s digital transformation, aiming to make airport transactions faster, safer, and more transparent.

According to PAA officials, passengers and staff will be able to make all payments digitally, eliminating the need for physical cash. The authority is introducing QR code-based payment systems in collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). This system will allow travelers to pay for services such as food, shopping, parking, and lounges using their smartphones or digital wallets.

Officials said the cashless transition will enhance financial security and reduce risks of fraud or mismanagement. It will also improve convenience for both travelers and vendors, creating a smoother and more efficient airport experience.

In the first phase, the initiative will roll out at Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore airports within the next few weeks. Once successfully implemented, it will extend to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot, before reaching all regional terminals.

A spokesperson for the PAA said the transformation aligns with Pakistan’s national fintech vision, which promotes contactless and traceable digital payments. He added that this system will help ensure accountability in financial operations and support the country’s growing digital economy. Dawn

“This initiative is designed to make our airports smarter and more efficient,” the spokesperson said. “It will reduce manual errors, prevent cash-related fraud, and simplify transactions for everyone using airport services.”

Industry experts believe that adopting a cashless model will place Pakistan among the countries leading in digital aviation management. It also reflects a global shift toward fintech integration at major transport hubs.

Travelers have welcomed the decision, calling it a step in the right direction. Many see digital payments as a safer and faster alternative, especially in high-traffic environments like airports.
