Only 40% of Karachi Commerce Students Pass Annual Board Exams

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi has released the results for the Intermediate Part-I Commerce Annual Examinations 2025, showing that only 40 percent of students passed all seven papers. The outcome has raised concern among teachers and parents, as it highlights the ongoing academic challenges faced by first-year commerce students in the city.

According to Controller of Examinations Zarina Rashid, a total of 26,774 students were enrolled for the exams, and 25,907 appeared. Out of these, 10,399 students managed to clear all seven papers and earned a complete pass. The remaining candidates passed between one and six papers, indicating mixed performance levels across various colleges.

Data released by the board shows that 3,293 students passed six papers, while 3,213 students cleared five. Another 2,572 candidates passed four papers. The trend continued with 2,280 students passing three papers, 1,732 clearing two, and 1,510 students managing to pass only one paper. These numbers show that a large portion of students struggled to perform consistently across all subjects.

Officials said the results reflect both the academic pressure and the gaps in preparation among first-year commerce students. Many colleges reported that students continue to face difficulty adjusting to the shift from school learning to intermediate-level coursework. Teachers believe that better attendance, stronger study habits, and regular assessments could improve performance in future exam cycles.

The examination department noted that the results also show positive signs. Students who passed fewer papers still have a chance to improve in the coming months. They can prepare for supplementary exams and complete their first-year requirements with more practice and guidance. Officials said the board will continue to monitor performance trends to help institutions support struggling students more effectively.

Across Pakistan, education boards face similar concerns. Reports by Dawn, the BBC, and Wikipedia highlight the pressure on students during intermediate years and the need for better academic support systems. Karachi’s latest results add to these discussions, showing that many students require stronger foundations before entering the final year of intermediate education.

In my view, the results show the reality many students face today. Commerce students often juggle part-time work, family responsibilities, and academic pressure at the same time. While the pass rate is low, it also serves as a reminder that education reforms, teacher support, and consistent student effort can create meaningful change. These students still have time to catch up and build confidence before next year’s exams.
