The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a major firewall upgrade project to reinforce the country’s digital defense systems. The plan aims to protect national telecom infrastructure from evolving cyberattacks and enhance network monitoring and response capabilities.
According to officials, the firewall renewal and upgrade project carries an estimated budget ranging between Rs. 40 million and Rs. 120 million. The final cost will depend on the selected hardware, license duration, and the overall scale of implementation.
Once completed, the new system will provide PTA with improved visibility and real-time control over its networks. It will also strengthen resilience against sophisticated cyber threats that target both telecom companies and public digital services in Pakistan.
Project details reveal that the upgrade involves renewing and expanding the existing network security infrastructure at PTA Headquarters and regional offices. The plan includes deploying next-generation firewalls (NGFWs), renewing essential software licenses, and integrating the system with PTA data centers and national monitoring units.
The technical design of the new system includes key security features such as intrusion prevention systems, web filtering, VPN protection, malware defense, and SSL inspection. These tools will help detect and stop intrusion attempts before they reach critical components. The initiative will also support centralized management consoles and failover configurations to maintain uninterrupted network services even during hardware outages.
PTA plans to link the upgraded firewall setup with National CERT’s threat-intelligence framework to improve coordination and information sharing during cyber incidents. This step is expected to speed up detection and response time against malicious activity.
Implementation will proceed in multiple phases. The first stage focuses on assessing the current infrastructure, followed by procurement and installation of hardware. Afterward, the team will handle configuration, testing, and capacity-building sessions for PTA’s IT professionals. A post-deployment phase will ensure ongoing maintenance, 24/7 vendor support, and continuous updates for up to five years.
Cybersecurity experts describe this move as an essential investment in Pakistan’s digital future. As global cyberattacks increase in frequency and scale, governments are prioritizing proactive defense.
