Pakistan Elected to UN Human Rights Council for 2026–2028 Term

Pakistan, with a formidable majority vote. Has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the term of 2026-2028. The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday.

Dar thanked all member states. The United Nations for their support in a post on X, referring to Pakistan’s election as an “overwhelming majority.” He added that the election serves to record global admiration for Pakistan’s “strong credentials,” and recalled the country’s ongoing efforts in promoting and protecting human rights globally.

Dar reiterated that Pakistan is willing to continue cooperation with the international community on the basis of the principles of tolerance, mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperation. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to advance the universal principles of human rights and justice for all.

Pakistan has long been an active member state of the United Nations, with an important role in global peacekeeping and humanitarian redeployment. Pakistan is also one of the largest contributing countries in troops to the United Nations peacekeeping efforts stationed in some of the world’s most conflict-affected areas.

Earlier this year, Islamabad took up the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July. Pakistan also had assumed vice chair of the UNSC’s Counter.

The UNSC is the sole body within the United Nations to establish legally binding decisions and authorize the use of force and sanctions. Permanent members of the UNSC include the US, China, Russia, France and the UK, while the UNSC elects foundations if other members for terms of two years.


Pakistan is proving its value and diplomatic influence to key UN bodies, and its long-term commitment to international stability and peacekeeping is nationally established. Just last month, Pakistan called for more robust UN-led peacekeeping operations, with improved resources, effort and greater emphasis on conflict prevention before it escalates into violence.


Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has said peacekeeping missions need to be allowed to take advantage of their peacekeeping mandate with ceasefires, violence prevention, and for fostering negotiations and dialogue amongst conflicting parties.


This month, Pakistan is beginning a new term on the Human Rights Council, where Pakistan endeavors to continue supporting impede progress for multilateral activities that protect DEH, uphold equality principles, and build global consensus for rights-based cooperation.
