Julia Roberts, the Hollywood actress, has expressed emotional thoughts on her experiences in the early stages of her acting journey, including how difficult experiences made her grow, big and small, as a person and actress.
In an open discussion with PEOPLE Magazine, the actress of Pretty Woman said she didn’t enter her field with a lot of confidence. “I don’t think I entered into my career with much confidence,” said the actress, 57, who elaborated that people’s comments and judgments deeply affected her when she was younger.
“I had a couple of people [in the industry], who were really cruel,” Julia said which forced her to consider who she wanted to become. “It was a really interesting challenge for me to consider, the kind of person I wanted to aim to be,” she said.
The actress of The Hunt, revealed her era in her journey as “more bumps than the sails being smooth,” between 15 and 25 years old, that helped her recognize that she wanted to focus on the person she wanted to become and not just the career she wanted to participate in.
Julia said, “I thought that I could take the person I wanted to build and put that person in these different scenarios of work life.” Regardless of these hurdles, she would always find “shreds of gratitude,” always think there was a purpose behind every tough experience.
Upon looking back on those lessons, the star of My Best Friend’s Wedding expressed gratitude for them. “I think I now look at it as the life lessons that I’m the most grateful for because they offered me proof of my own endurance,” she said.
Yet, Roberts also expressed that sometimes insecurity would act as a hindrance. “Being insecure can be crippling. If someone embarrassed me it would instantly stop me,” she said. She said that she learned how to navigate rejection and criticism, which became key to her survival in Hollywood. “This is not an industry to be in if you can’t take some criticism or harshness or know you’re going to be embarrassed,” she continued.
