Shock and grief washed over Sindh on Wednesday after the shooting death of journalist Tufail Rind, General Secretary of Mirpur Mathelo Press Club, by unidentified attackers in Ghotki.
The police said that the deadly shooting occurred when an unidentified man shot Rind while he was riding his motorcycle to take his school-age kids to school near Masoo Wah, Jarwar Road. The attackers intercepted him on the road and shot him dead.
The journalist’s body was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Mirpur Mathelo as the police initiated a formal investigation. A police department spokesperson stated that two suspects have been arrested for the murder. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ghotki stated that the preliminary investigation found that this attack could be tied to a property dispute, although all possible motives are being investigated.
During the attack, Rind’s eight-year-old niece who was traveling with him fell from the motorcycle and received minor injuries. She was treated and discharged from DHQ Hospital, but she died later from trauma, according to officials.
The killing has received broad condemnation from journalists, rights groups, and political leaders. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and said “Attacks on journalists are attacks on freedom of the press.” Shah’s spokesperson later confirmed that the Inspector General of Police has been instructed to send a detailed report on the occurrence.
In the meantime, journalists in Ghotki protested outside the SSP’s office. Demanding the immediate arrest of everyone involved and enhanced protection for media workers. Many journalists called Rind a “committed voice for the truth,” who often raised local issues and corruption in his reporting.
