Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, has fiercely criticized world leaders for, as she said, “continuing to fuel” Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Thunberg made her statement after being freed by Israel and arriving in Athens, Greece, on Monday. dawn
She was one of the activists on the Global Sumud Flotilla. A fleet of 45 boats that departed from Spain last month to carry humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip. The flotilla was intercepted by the Israeli navy. Which held many of the activists and politicians, including former Pakistani senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan.
In her statements to reporters, she said that the interception of the flotilla was not the real story. “The real story is the genocide in Gaza.” She continued, “Our leaders who say they represent us, continue to arm and support Israel. They don’t represent us, they represent complicity.”
She called the very existence of the mission “shameful” and described Israel’s continued blockade of Gaza as “illegal and inhumane.” Thunberg pointed out that international law requires states to act to end genocide by halting arms transfers and diplomatic support to the perpetrators of it.
“We are not even seeing the very bare minimum from our governments,” she said. “Our international systems have failed the Palestinians. They not even able to stop the worst war crime that is occurring in front of us.”
Thunberg described how she faced mistreatment in Israeli captivity but said that that was not important. “The story is Israel’s ongoing massive destruction with genocidal intent,” she said.
The United Nations notes that since Israel began its military campaign in October 2023 following an attack by Hamas, over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza. Millions have been displaced, famine is being warned across the enclave by the UN.
In a recent report, UN investigators determined Israel was committing genocide, of which they accused the highest leaders in Israel of incitement for violence and destruction against the Palestinian people.
